JASON MRAZ

Waiting For My Rocket to Come (2002-2003)

In 2002, Mraz released his first major-label debut album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come. The album was a relative commercial success, peaking at number fifty-five on the Billboard Hot 200 and at number two on the Top Heatseekers Chart. The lead single from the album, "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)" was co-written by music production team The Matrix and it was Mraz's first top twenty single on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 15.
Mraz's friend and former roommate Billy "Bushwalla" Galewood collaborated on the album, co-writing "Curbside Prophet" and the album's third single, and "I'll Do Anything".

[edit] Touring and Mr. A–Z (2003-2008)

Mraz opened for Tracy Chapman in March 2003 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In July 2005, Mraz opened for Alanis Morissette during her Jagged Little Pill Acoustic Tour. On July 26, 2005, he released his second major-label album, Mr. A–Z, for Atlantic Records. It entered the Billboard 200 album chart at number 4.[8] In December, the album earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, while its producer, the prolific Steve Lillywhite, received a nomination for Producer of the Year.[9]
Mraz began his long-running tour in support of Mr. A–Z at the San Diego Music Awards on September 12. The tour featured a variety of opening acts, including Bushwalla and Tristan Prettyman, with whom he had co-written the duet "Shy That Way" in 2002.[10] Mraz and Prettyman dated, ending their relationship in 2006. They also co-wrote the song "All I Want For Christmas is Us".[citation needed] In November 2005, Mraz opened for the Rolling Stones on five dates during their 2005–2006 world tour. Also in 2005, Mraz was one of many singers featured in the fall advertisement campaign for The Gap entitled "Favorites". The music-themed campaign also featured other singers including Tristan Prettyman, Michelle Branch, Joss Stone, Keith Urban, Alanis Morissette, Brandon Boyd, and Michelle Williams.[11] In December 2005, Mraz released the first part of his ongoing podcast.

In March 2006, Mraz also performed for the first time at a sold-out performance in Singapore with Toca Rivera as part of the annual Mosaic Music Festival.[citation needed] In May 2006, Mraz toured mostly small venues and music festivals in the U.S., along with a few shows in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The tour included a May 6, 2006 acoustic show with P.O.D., Better Than Ezra, Live, and The Presidents of the United States of America. Mraz was featured as a headlining guest of St. Louis's annual Fair St. Louis and performed a free concert at the base of the Arch on July 1, 2006.
In December 2006, Selections for Friends, the live, online-only album recorded during the Songs for Friends Tour, was released. Selections for Friends features Jason's favorite songs from the Schubas Tavern and Villa Montalvo shows he played in July 2006. Jason Mraz began 2007 by debuting his new single "The Beauty in Ugly", an earlier track penned by Mraz entitled "Plain Jane" that he rewrote for the ABC television program Ugly Betty. The song was featured as a part of ABC's "Be Ugly in '07" campaign.[12] He has since released a song in Spanish entitled "La Nueva Belleza (The New Beauty)".[13]
In 2007, American Idol contestant Chris Richardson performed "Geek in the Pink", which subsequently garnered the song mass recognition and increased downloads at the American iTunes Store. "Geek in the Pink" peaked at #22 on the U.S. iTunes Store on March 10, 2007, but it was ineligible for the site's Hot 100.[citation needed] The tape-recording of bootlegs during Mraz's shows is explicitly supported by him and his management.[14]

[edit] We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. (2008-2009)

Mraz released his third studio album, We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. on May 13, 2008. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard Hot 200, giving Mraz his highest charting album to date. Following the success of lead single, I'm Yours, the album broke into the top ten of many international music charts and charted in the top three in Australia and the US.[15]
The first single "I'm Yours" reached #1 on AAA radio charts in the US. The single was a B-side to Mr A-Z, and was made famous by recordings from his live shows. In September 2008, the song became Mraz's first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking so far at #6. As of October 14, 2008, the album has been certified Gold by the RIAA, selling in excess of 500,000 copies in the US. The song was a commercial success worldwide, peaking in the top ten of multiple European charts and topping the charts in New Zealand for six weeks.[16] In 2008, Mraz launched his single "I'm Yours" at the music industry only event titled Sunset Sessions. Exactly one year later, Jason was nominated for a Grammy on the single.
Mraz and his song "I'm Yours" were nominated for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 2009 51st Grammy Awards. The album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical in 2009. On January 31, 2009, Mraz was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, performing "I'm Yours" and "Lucky", the latter with Colbie Caillat. "Lucky" has peaked on the Hot 100 at 48.
With "Make It Mine" and "Lucky", Mraz won two awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals at the 2010 52nd Grammy Awards.

[edit] Fourth studio album (2009–present)

In Early 2009, a song titled, "Try Try Try" was leaked out into the internet. New songs have been performed in his recent concerts, some of which have been uploaded onto YouTube. Earlier this year, Jason Mraz spent time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil working with Milton Nascimento. Mraz also recently met and worked with Willie Nelson, whose 'style' is fondly referenced in one of Mraz's early hits "Curbside Prophet."
In November 2009 Mraz posted on his Myspace page plans for a new album to be recorded starting in December, stating "In 2 weeks time I will enter the studio and begin recording the next album. Only a handful of songs are written and slated but the momentum of love is with me. Every day new verses get added on. The songs are coming together piece by piece. The process is unlike any of the other records before this. It's like I'm being gifted the album without having to do the work. I'm creating that in 6 months the project will be complete and then we'll hit the road again with new sounds and new musicians." [17]
Mraz has recently returned from London, England where he was working with a London Studio for his new album with producer Martin Terefe. Christina Perri has also recently tweeted about making a 'masterpiece' with Mraz. Jason also got a chance to work with British singer-songwriter Dido on his upcoming album.[18]
Mraz recently contributed vocals for The Grooveline Horns' eponymous EP on the track "Ffun", a cover of the Con Funk Shun song, released March 2, 2010.[19]
In August 2010, Mraz had a Q&A interview with Spin (magazine). In the interview he stated the current possible titles for his fourth album are Peace Canoe or The Love Album. [20]
On September 28th, 2010, Mraz announced the upcoming release of the new "Life Is Good EP" consisting of recordings from his concerts from Maine to the Life is Good Festival in Canton, Massachusetts which will include live recordings of 'Coyotes' and multiple new songs, 'San Disco Reggaefornia', 'Up', 'What Mama Say', and 'The Freedom Song'. The album is slated for digital release only on October 5.[21]

Roots

The main gate into Tōdai-ji
The beginning of building a temple where the huge Tōdai-ji complex sits today can be dated to 728, when Emperor Shōmu established Kinshōsen-ji (金鐘山寺) as an appeasement for Prince Motoi, his first son with his Fujiwara clan consort Kōmyōshi. Prince Motoi died a year after his birth.
During the Tenpyō era, Japan suffered from a series of disasters and epidemics. It was after experiencing these problems that Emperor Shōmu issued an edict in 741 to promote the construction of provincial temples throughout the nation. Tōdai-ji (still Kinshōsen-ji at the time) was appointed as the Provincial temple of Yamato Province and the head of all the provincial temples. With the alleged coup d'état by Nagaya in 729, an outbreak of smallpox around 735–737, worsened by consecutive years of poor crops, then followed by a rebellion led by Fujiwara no Hirotsugu in 740, the country was in a chaotic position. Emperor Shōmu had been forced to move the capital four times, indicating the level of instability during this period.[3]

[edit] Role in early Japanese Buddhism

Under the Ritsuryō system of government in the Nara Period, Buddhism was heavily regulated by the state through the Sōgō (僧綱?, Office of Priestly Affairs). During this time, Tōdai-ji served as the central administrative temple for the provincial temples[4] for the six Buddhist schools in Japan at the time: the Hossō, Kegon, Jōjitsu, Sanron, Ritsu and Kusha. Letters dating from this time also show that all six Buddhist schools had offices at Tōdai-ji, complete with administrators, shrines and their own library.[4]
The middle gate to the daibutsuden
Japanese Buddhism during this time still maintained the lineage of the Vinaya and all officially licensed monks had to take their ordination under the Vinaya at Tōdai-ji. In 754, ordination was given by Ganjin, who arrived in Japan after overcoming hardships over 12 years and six attempts of crossing the sea from China, to Empress Kōken, former Emperor Shōmu and others. Later Buddhist monks, including Kūkai and Saichō took their ordination here as well.[5] During Kūkai's administration of the Sōgō, additional ordination ceremonies were added to Tōdai-ji, including ordination of the Bodhisattva Precepts from the Brahma Net Sutra and the esoteric Precepts, or Samaya, from Kukai's own newly established Shingon school of Buddhism. Additionally, Kūkai added an Abhiseka Hall for the use of initiating monks of the six Nara schools into the esoteric teachings.[4] by 829.
During its height of power, Tōdai-ji's famous Shuni-e ceremony was established by the monk Jitchū, and continues to this day.

[edit] Decline

As the center of power in Japanese Buddhism shifted away from Nara to Mount Hiei and the Tendai sect, and later when the capital of Japan moved to Kamakura, Tōdai-ji's role in maintaining authority declined as well. In later generations, the Vinaya lineage also died out, despite repeated attempts to revive it, thus no more ordination ceremonies take place at Tōdai-ji.

[edit] Architecture

[edit] Initial construction

The belfry
In 743, Emperor Shōmu issued a law in which he stated that the people should become directly involved with the establishment of new Buddha temples throughout Japan. His personal belief was that such piety would inspire Buddha to protect his country from further disaster. Gyōki, with his pupils, traveled the provinces asking for donations. According to records kept by Tōdai-ji, more than 2,600,000 people in total helped construct the Great Buddha and its Hall.[6][7] The 16 m (52 ft)[8] high statue was built through eight castings over three years, the head and neck being cast together as a separate element.[9] The making of the statue was started first in Shigaraki. After enduring multiple fires and earthquakes, the construction was eventually resumed in Nara in 745,[6] and the Buddha was finally completed in 751. A year later, in 752, the eye-opening ceremony was held with an attendance of 10,000 people to celebrate the completion of the Buddha. The Indian priest Bodhisena performed the eye-opening for Emperor Shōmu. The project nearly bankrupted Japan's economy, consuming most of the available bronze of the time.
The original complex also contained two 100 m pagodas, perhaps second only to the pyramids of Egypt in height at the time. These were destroyed by earthquake. The Shōsōin was its storehouse, and now contains many artifacts from the Tenpyo period of Japanese history.

[edit] Reconstructions post-Nara Period

Nandaimon, the Great Southern Gate
The Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) has been rebuilt twice after fire. The current building was finished in 1709, and although immense—57 m long and 50 m wide—it is actually 30% smaller than its predecessor. The Great Buddha statue has been recast several times for various reasons, including earthquake damage. The current hands of the statue were made in the Momoyama Period (1568–1615), and the head was made in the Edo period (1615–1867).
The existing Nandaimon (Great South Gate) is a reconstruction of end-12th century based on Song Dynasty style. The dancing figures of the Nio, the two 28-foot-tall guardians at the Nandaimon, were built at around the same time by Unkei, Kaikei and their workshop members. The Nio are known as Ungyo, which by tradition has a closed mouth, and Agyo, which has an open mouth. The two figures were closely evaluated and extensively restored by a team of art conservators between 1988 and 1993. Until then, these sculptures had never before been moved from the niches in which they were originally installed. This complex preservation project, costing $4.7 million, involved a restoration team of 15 experts from the National Treasure Repairing Institute in Kyoto.[10]

[edit] Dimensions of the Daibutsu

Daibutsu of Tōdai-ji.
The temple gives the following dimensions for the statue: [11]
  • Height: 14.98 m (49.1 ft)
  • Face: 5.33 m (17.5 ft)
  • Eyes: 1.02 m (3.3 ft)
  • Nose: 0.5 m (1.6 ft)
  • Ears: 2.54 m (8.3 ft)
The statue weighs 500 tonnes (550 short tons).

IMB or Indonesia Mencari Bakat, this is the Indonesian version of Indonesia’s Got Talent.. They have the same rule since the beginning with AGT. They selected contestants from every city, make it to 4 groups, and then winners from every group went to the semifinal round.
This TV show shows weekly every Saturday night, and Sunday night for the result show, in Trans TV. Well, it’s really happening in Indonesia, famous, wellknown, or whatever u called. If the show air, u’ll see that the twitter trending topic full of IMB’s stuff. So there are 14 contestants with so many talents in the semifinal round. Well i want to preview their talent for u all.
Hudson, the two face talent. He makes his self into 2 characters, man and woman called Hudson and Jessica, sings with two different voices, and dress up differently for both sides. And it’s really interesting how he changes his voice. He’s my favorite contestant. Look how total he is in his outfit, awesome every week. But he still needs to practice his vocal.24842_1113169605566_1716692087_210604_6176101_n 111067234 111627572

Belda, a fire dancer. Nothing interesting from this contestant. More and more weeks and his performance is getting boring.belda
Klantink, music group, play instrument and sing too.. Sometimes they use things surround as their music instrument. Pretty cool.31315_1245319427913_1677237378_487772_7966781_n
Funky Papua, dance group. Presented some Papua dances combine with modern dance. They always funny and of course have lot of fans.112470039

Fay Nabila, another young girl with super dance ability. She knows how to rock the stage with her cuteness and face. 107035207
Bonita, great singer with great and powerful voice. I admit that she has great voice, really. But her personality is low, i dont know. I meant only by looking her performance i can say that. Her face on the stage isnt likeable, u know what i mean.x2_1c16389
Janice & Ryan, sibling with their piano talent. They are awesome. Their fingers movement on the piano are brilliant. And they also already had so many compliments and awards. Too bad they were already out of the show. They get the talent.108190390
Berto Pah, i think this young guy is awesome. He presents his talent of playing sasando, traditional instrument from NTT. It’s kinda like harp and lute, with more interesting  shape and curve. Too bad he was out. I love his performance.107108235
Lius, a man with his seriosa voice. Not really good, and he already out.IMG00038-20100616-1856
Saratus Persen, another music group like Klantink. Play some instruments and sometimes use things around. But i dont really like their personality. Serampangan (dont know the english, hehe). And they were out!108341362
So yeah, that’s it. All semifinalists of IMB Trans. Well, let’s see who will be the winner. I support Hudson and Brandon. Haha! Well, somehow the judges couldnt reach the same decision and it’s quite disappointing. And it’s their duty to decide who will out from the contest. I hope they pick carefully and right.
